The inaugural Virtual Program from The Friends of Grant Cottage for the 2020 season. We will be continuing to release a roster of curated programs for everyone to enjoy while safely social distancing.
One hundred and thirty-five years ago, at the age of 63, U.S. Grant finally bowed to the enemy who could defeat him – cancer. It has become the tradition at Grant Cottage to mark this somber occasion by recreating the Grant family circle and allowing those who loved him most to speak about Grant the husband, father and grandfather. Reenactors portraying the Grant family and close friends will gather on the Cottage porch and bid the man they loved and respected a final, very personal farewell. Among those speaking will be Grant’s physician, Dr. John H. Douglas, and family friend (and the General’s publisher), Mark Twain. The program will include music, and while acknowledging grief, will be a celebration of Grant’s truly extraordinary life.
We’d like to thank our dedicated Staff and Volunteers for their time and commitment. The Friends of Grant Cottage is a non-profit organization dedicated to the care of Grant Cottage. Consider making a tax-deductible donation today to support.
