One Real American: the true story of Ely Parker, Seneca sachem, Civil War Brevet General, and close friend of Ulysses S. Grant

Storyteller and author, Joe Bruchac of Greenfield Center, New York, will present a program about Grant’s friend, Civil War staff secretary, and first Native American Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Ely Parker. Joe will also share insights into Grant’s relationship with Native Americans during his time in public office and over the course of their friendship. This program correlates with Joe’s new Ely Parker biography, being published this Fall.

Joe’s poems, articles and stories have appeared in over 500 publications and he is the author of more than 170 books for adults and children. Much of his writing is drawn from his connection to the Adirondack mountain foothills town where he grew up and his Abenaki ancestry.
