April Virtual Program
Most people wouldn’t think of Detroit when they think of Ulysses S. Grant, but as a young officer and husband he was stationed there. A rental home in the Midwestern boomtown would be his first home with his new bride Julia and one that she would remember fondly in later years. In this 175 th Anniversary year of Ulysses and Julia’s marriage, we invite you to learn more about the couple’s life in Detroit in the 1840s-50s, the interesting journey of the historic home, and its exciting future. We will explore this lesser-known story with Maud Lyon who has been working for the Michigan History Center on planning for the restoration and redevelopment of the historic structure.
**This virtual program is part of the ongoing In the Footsteps of Grant series presented by The Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site, and includes interviews with staff at other Grant-related sites. Please consider making a donation to The Friends to support free programming for future seasons.
Presenter Maud Lyons has guided the development of nonprofits for 42 years. She founded and led CultureSource, Detroit’s first arts service organization serving a seven-county region in Michigan, and transformed the city’s Detroit Historical Department. Lyons additionally founded two nonprofit organizations and guided the merger of four existing nonprofits to form the successful Belle Isle Conservancy that now supports Detroit’s 985-acre island park.
