Winsor Brown French, the Soldier, the Lawyer, the Man

Winsor B. French was born in Vermont and raised in Wilton, New York. He was respected for his sense of honor and duty during his service in the Civil War. He led the 77th Regiment of NYS Volunteer Infantry and was beloved by the soldiers under his command. Following the war, when he returned to Saratoga Springs, Brevet Brigadier General French used the same qualities as an attorney and civic leader. Learn from engaging storyteller Gloria May how his accomplishments are still part of Saratoga today and what part he played in Grant’s funeral on Mount McGregor on August 4, 1885. Gloria has been guiding tours and telling tales of Saratoga for 20 years for the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and Visitors Center.

The suggested donation for Grant Cottage Porch Programs is $5 per person. These programs are made possible thanks to a grant from the Adirondack Trust Community Fund. Our events are supported with funding from the New York State Park and Trail Partnership Program (NYSPTPP) and New York’s Environmental Protection Fund. The NYSPTPP is administered by Parks & Trails New York, in partnership with the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
