We are thrilled to invite you and your Scouts to participate in the inaugural Scouting Day at Grant Cottage on Mt McGregor, on September 9th, 2023. Enjoy a day filled with adventure, learning, and camaraderie as Scouts of all ages come together to explore the historical significance of Grant Cottage and engage in a wide range of activities. At Grant Cottage, we have tailored the event to cater to the diverse interests and abilities of Scouts, ensuring that there is something special for everyone to enjoy. Not only will this be a fun-filled experience but also an opportunity for Scouts to earn merit badges and contribute positively to the community through a service project. Join us on to celebrate scouting, history, and community service.

Grant Cottage on Mt McGregor provides the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable experience that fosters learning, character development, and friendship. We hope you’ll share this exciting event with your Scouts and their families. Click here for the day’s schedule.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s in store for your Scouts:

  • Service Project (Scouts BSA): Engage your older Scouts in a meaningful service project. Our chosen project includes bench building and site/trail cleanup. Safety guidelines have been put in place, and we will work closely with Pettey’s sawmill to ensure all necessary precautions are taken. Cub Scouts (elementary age) will have a chance to participate in small-scale trail cleanup during the history hike.

  • Activity Stations (20-25 minutes each): There will be a variety of engaging and educational activity stations suitable for all ages.

  • Orienteering Course along Scavenger Hunt Route: Enhance navigation skills and teamwork as Scouts follow clues.

  • 19th Century Games/Graces Tournament: Step back in time and enjoy traditional games and graces from the 1800s.

  • Morse Code Activity: Discover the art of communication using this historic code.

  • Guess the Artifact: Put your historical detective skills to the test and identify mysterious artifacts.

  • Civil War Battle Geography Matching Activity/Grant’s Homes Matching Activity: Learn about key Civil War battles and the significance of Grant’s homes.

  • House Tours: Explore Grant Cottage and gain insights into the life of General Ulysses S. Grant.

  • Civil War Tent & Clothes: Get hands-on experience with Civil War-era tents and clothing.

  • Merit Badge Opportunities: We have identified several opportunities to fulfill merit badge requirements for Scouts, including Architecture, American Heritage, Citizenship in the Nation, Archaeology, and Landscape Architecture. Scouts will need to have already opened their merit badges prior to coming onsite, and will then fulfill the necessary requirements on Scouting Day.
