Grant Cottage Visitor
Center Project

Grant Cottage. Where Ulysses S. Grant came in 1885 to finish his memoirs, has been a museum since 1890. For the last fifteen years, The Friends of The Ulysses S. Grant Cottage have told Grant’s story through tours of the cottage, educational programs, exhibits and publications. Our vision has been for a visitor center that provides space for exhibits and programs, a gift shop, enhanced handicapped facilities, and restrooms.

The arts and crafts style garage near the cottage, long empty, seemed a perfect building for our visitors. Now that the building has been made available for renovation by the New York State Department of Correctional Services in cooperation with the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

The estimated cost of the remodeling is $175,000 to $200,000, which includes reinforcing the roof, plumbing, new doors, electrical service, walls and partitions, windows, painting, furniture and flooring.

The Friends of The U.S. Grant Cottage, Inc. has already spent $50,000. We have been very fortunate to obtain a grant from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund for $60,615 dollars for this project. The Friends must match this money with our own funds or in-kind donations. Construction began in the fall of 2004.
